Direct traffic is a measurement failure
Bookmarks exist. So do stripped referrers, assistant clicks, and in-app browsers. Calling the residue Direct is how a channel disappears from the meeting.
AttributionDirect

“Direct” used to mean typed URLs and bookmarks. It now means every arrival the collector could not name. In-app browsers drop referrers. Assistants drop referrers. Privacy features drop referrers. A 40% Direct share is usually a 40% unknown share with a calmer name.
Vector 5 still has a Direct row — we do not invent sources. We also peel off what we can name: assistant hosts, utm_medium=ai_search, crawlers that never ran JS, headless agents. The Direct that remains is smaller and more honest: people who arrived without a signal, not a junk drawer for AI.
What we will not do
We will not “model” Direct back into ChatGPT because the industry average says so. That would make the dashboard look clever and the manifest a lie. If the referrer is empty and the UTM is empty, the source is empty. The actor may still be human.
Rename unknown to Direct and you will stop trying to name it.
